Why We Face the Impossible: Trusting God when life is overwhelming

Life often presents us with mountains that seem too high to climb, battles too fierce to fight, and obstacles too overwhelming to overcome.

Whether it’s a financial crisis, a broken relationship, a health struggle, or an uncertain future, we all encounter moments when we feel like we’re up against the impossible. But as Christians, we know that “impossible” is not a word in God’s vocabulary.

God Specializes in the Impossible

The Bible is filled with stories of God making a way where there was none. When the Israelites stood before the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army closing in, God parted the waters (Exodus 14:21-22). When a young shepherd boy faced a giant warrior with only a sling and five stones, God gave him the victory (1 Samuel 17:45-50). Jesus Himself declared, “with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).

What seems insurmountable to us is just another opportunity for God to display His power. If He can bring down walls, shut the mouths of lions, and raise the dead, He can certainly move in our situation.

Faith Moves Mountains

Jesus tells us in Matthew 17:20 that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. But faith isn’t just believing that God can do the impossible—it’s trusting Him even when we don’t see the answer right away. Faith calls us to step forward, even when the path isn’t clear, believing that God is already making a way.

Facing the impossible means choosing to trust God’s plan over our fears. It’s in the waiting, the struggling, and the unknown that our faith is refined and strengthened. Our job isn’t to figure out how God will work—it’s to trust that He will.

Overcoming Fear with God’s Promises

Fear often paralyzes us when we stand before the impossible. But God’s Word is filled with promises that remind us He is always with us:

  • “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)
  • “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:14)
  • “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Joshua 1:9)

Holding onto His promises helps us walk forward with confidence, knowing that we are never alone in the battle.

Prayer and Surrender: The Key to Breakthrough

When we face the impossible, our greatest weapon is prayer. Not just a quick request for help, but deep, persistent prayer that seeks God’s presence, wisdom, and strength. When we surrender our struggles to Him, we acknowledge that we cannot do it alone—and that’s exactly where He meets us.

Jesus tells us in Mark 11:24, “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them..” While the answer may not always come in the way or timing we expect, we can trust that God is working for our good.

Testimonies of the Impossible Made Possible

Think back to times when God has already brought you through what seemed impossible. Every answered prayer, every past victory, and every miracle in Scripture remind us that He is still the same today. When we reflect on His faithfulness, we gain the strength to trust Him again.

Final Thoughts

No matter what impossible situation you’re facing today, remember that you serve a God who specializes in impossibilities. He doesn’t ask you to have all the answers—He simply asks you to trust Him. Walk forward in faith, hold onto His promises, and watch as He turns your impossible into a testimony of His glory.

Stay strong in Him,
